Coaches Rick Williams and Dan Wagner notched their first-ever Diocesan Championship on Sunday night at Bishop Brossart when their 8th Grade St. Mary Saints repeated their diocesan championship feat of one year ago, winning the 2009 edition 39-22 over Immaculate Heart of Mary, the top-seed representative from the Kenton County Parochial League. The IHM Saints were the Covington Catholic Big School regular season and post-season tournament champions.
The Saints jumped out to an 8-0 lead, which converted to a 10-2 first quarter lead that saw Justin Saunders net a pair of baskets, while Mitch Kramer stroked two 3-point goals. IHM cut the Saints lead to 14-7 mid-second quarter, but the Saints turned them back, extending their lead to 18-7 by intermission. Saunders continued his offensive assault, hitting a field-goal and connecting on four free-throws to amass 10 points in the first half.
The second half was more of the same as the Saint Mary Saints doubled it up on the champions of the CovCath league 28-14 with Saunders adding five more, and Jordan Frommeyer tacking on another five via a bucket and three free-throws. By the fourth quarter it was only a matter of how much and the party began to get underway as it became increasingly evident that the St. Mary Saints would cut the nets down for the second straight year, repeating their effort of a year ago, when they defeated the St. Joe, Crescent Springs Cavs in the 7th Grade championship game. When the final horn sounded St. Mary had defeated their IHM counterparts 39-22.
Justin Saunders led all scorers with 21 points. Jordan Frommeyer finished his night's work with 7, Mitch Kramer added 6, Ben Uebel 3, and Jacob Elbert 2.
IHM placed six Saints in the scoring column led by Zach Carr and Adam Goddard with 6 points apiece. Mighty Mite point guard Ethan Egbers put up 4 points, Mitchell Duebbing 3, Alex Conradi 2, and Bobby Beatrice GREAT SEASON SAINTS View Championship PicturesPhoto: From L to R: Standing Head Coach Rick Williams, Jordan Frommeyer, Mitch Kramer, Sam Wilson, Justin Saunders, Mason Meyers, Jacob Elbert, Stats Chris Robinson, Robbie Barnett, Jeremy Perce, and Asst Coach Dan Wagner Kneeling Tyler Robinson and Ben Uebel |
