Sunday January 11th - 8th Grade Boys Championship

St. Thomas/St. Catherine 31 - St. Mary 26 

The final game of St. Mary’s tournament matched St. Mary against the St. Thomas/St. Catherine TomColts. The Saints trailed 8-4 after the opening quarter and 12-6 at the half. The Saints picked up the intensity on offense and scored 9 points in the quarter but still trailed 22-15 at the end of the third quarter. Michael Bueter hit a huge three pointer but Jordan Frommeyer made an outstanding steal at mid court and finished it off with a lay up to cut the lead to 2 points at 26-24. But the Saints could not get any closer and they lost 31-26.

Justin Saunders led the Saints with 14 points and Mason Myers added 5. Sam Wilson scored 3 points and Jordan Frommeyer and Jacob Elbert finished with 2 points each. Ben Eubel, Mitch Kramer, Jeremy Perce and Robbie Barnett played hard for Rick William’s squad.

Michael Beuter scored 12 points, and Nathan Grosser added 8 points. The TomColts played hard the entire game.

Sunday January 11th - 8th Grade Girls Championship

St. Henry 30 - St. Mary 14 

The 8th grade girls championship game featured the St. Mary Saints versus the St. Henry Crusaders. In spite of field goals from Brannon Hehn, Emily Greis and Tori Hackworth, St. Henry jumped out to an 11-6 lead after one period as Olivia Voskuhl scored 6 points for St. Henry. The Crusaders kept grinding and increased to 19-10 at intermission. St. Mary had a tough time getting shots to fall in the second half and the Cusaders pulled away for a 30-14 win to secure the championship.

Chelsea Wechback led the balance Saints scoring with 4 points and Tori Hackworth and McKenzie Dischar added 3 points each. Emily Greis and Brannon Hehn finished with 2 points each. Kelsaey Zalac, Mallory Rolf, Emily Weyer, Molly Kitchen, Corrine Icard, Maria Greis, Natalie Campbell and Courtney LeDonne played their best to try and get the Saints a victory.

Olivia Voskuhl led all scorers with 16 points.

Sunday January 11th - 8th Grade B Boys Championship

Southgate 34 - Saint Mary 31 

St. Mary matched up against a tough Southgate Lions team in the 8th grade B boys championship game. The Saints came out hot as Justin Walerius hit a pair of three pointers and Elliot “Big E” Rust hit a pair of field goals and a free throw to give the Saints an 11-7 lead after one period. But Southgate answered in the second and led at the half 19-16. Southgate widened their lead to 26-20 after three periods. Michael Landwehr hit a field goal to make it 28-24. Then David Paulin hit a big three pointer form the corner to close it to 28-27. After a Southgate free throw, the saints fed David Paulin for a lay up to tie the game at 29-29 with 1:50 to go. The Saints held Southgate from scoring and Michael Landwehr drove the baseline for a lay up to give the Saints a 31-29 lead with 1:38 to go. The Lions then hit a free throw. David Paulin then launched a three pointer that went halfway down and came out. Southgate hit a pair of free throws to take a 32-31 lead and hit a lay up to close the game out at 34-31.  

Elliot Rust paced St. Mary’s balanced attack with 9 points and Justin Walerius added 6. David Paulin finished with 5 points, Michael Landwehr had 4, and Hank Nienaber had 3. Jared Fischesser and Eli Nienaber each had a field goal. Matthew Abercrombie had a blocked shot and Jacob Mader and Jeff Kuhl played tough for St. Mary.

Jake Gronotte led the Lions with 12 points.

St. Joseph 28 - St. Mary 27 

Mitch Orth and his Saints took the floor with a match up with the St. Joseph Bluejays to decide the 7th grade boys championship. St. Mary fell behind 6-4 after one period and 14-6 at the end of the half. They closed the gap to 20-13 in the third quarter on 4 points from Ted MacDonald and 2 by Drew Berkemeyer. St. Mary came out fired up in the final period. Drew Berkemeyer hit 3 field goals and a pair of free throws and Alex “Skinny” Trentman hit a pair of field goals to 26-24. Andrew Kramer was fouled with a little over one minute to play and hit one free throw to get the Saints within one point at 26-25. But the Bluejays hit a pair of free throws to make it 28-25 with less than 30 seconds to play. Jacob Jennings had played a great game at the point and he then dished to Alex Trentman who drove the lane and hit a lay up with 16 seconds left. But the Bluejays hit a field goal with 7 seconds left and a last second three pointer missed the mark and the Bluejays hung on for 28-27 victory.

Drew Berkemeyer led the Saints with 12 points and Ted MacDonald added 7. Alex Trentman finished with 6 points and Andrew Kramer hit 2 free throws. Chase Britt, Zach Schneider, Austin Shannon, Michael Caldwell and Joey Dawn played tough for St. Mary.

Erik Rieger paced the Bluejays with 9 points.
